Stage three of the Jerringot Wetlands birdwatching project was completed on Friday 12 June, with a new floating platform installed in the pond. Following the bird hide extension and surrounding revegetation, this latest addition gives water birds a place to roost and makes it easier for birders to spot them from the bird hide.
The floating frame was built off site by club member Brad Ferrier using PVC piping, then assembled on site with the recycled-plastic DuraGrate platform and mooring fittings attached. Brad and Rod Lowther then positioned and anchored the raft, so it stays aligned while still moving naturally to accommodate changes in wind and water levels. David Tytherleigh helped by providing onshore support.

Only a few birds were seen over the weekend, so it may take a little time for them to settle in. Members are encouraged to visit the wetland, enjoy the bird hide, and perhaps be the first to photograph a bird using the new platform.
The project was fully funded by the Geelong Field Naturalist Club, thanks to the Environment Department of the City of Greater Geelong for supporting and approving the structure within the reserve.
