iNaturalist Bioblitzes

A bioblitz is a period of intense biological surveying in an attempt to record all the living species within a designated area.

The Great Southern BioBlitz is run across the Southern Hemisphere in Spring. The dates change each year to allow for the seasonal variation in which species are present and observable.

The City Nature Challenge is an annual four-day global bioblitz run at the end of April in which participating cities compete to record as many organisms as possible.

Bioblitz Trip Plans

Start with a survey at home photographing birds, insects and plants within your home limits.

GFNC members have created Trip Plans to help you to survey within the broader Geelong area. Each Trip Plan is based on a designated part of the Geelong region and visits a number of parks and reserves covering a variety of habitats.

Trip Plans include a map providing journey details and a list of species that might be found at each location. Trip plans can be viewed online, downloaded or printed.

Geelong and Corio

The Geelong and Corio drive has some interesting sites to visit to see where the natural world coexists with urban and marine port environments. Head off to the city loop and start recording observations along the way.

Brisbane Ranges

The Brisbane Ranges drive visits eight locations of natural history interest due to their habitat or high species biodiversity. Along the way, additional roadside stops can be made for quick exploratory walks into the surrounding bushland.

Bellarine

This drive focuses on the northern and eastern areas of the Bellarine. The sites selected include a range of areas with diverse natural biodiversity near Drysdale and St Leonards.

South Barwon

The South Barwon drive visits many reserves in the Geelong region including the Ramsar-listed Lake Connewarre and a couple of spots for beachcombing. Covering 55km, it samples many different habitats and living creatures.

Golden Plains

A drive through the Golden Plains is a rewarding experience with plants, birds and invertebrates in open and woody grasslands and ephemeral wetlands.

You Yangs

This drive covers a day’s surveying around the You Yangs. The sites selected are known areas of natural history interest, habitat diversity and species biodiversity.
