Lake Ayrey is near Birregurra and when filled can be very rewarding. Regular visitors include Latham’s Snipe and Brolgas. This year there has been an abundance of Purple Swamphens and Eurasian Coots. As well as the Lake we will also walk along Ayrey’s Reserve Road towards the Highway to inspect the established roadside plantings.
We will then adjourn to the Birregurra Golf Course and the Heritage Trail to see the impact of plantings undertaken by the Birregurra Landcare Group along the Barwon River over the last decade.
Meet: At 9.00 am for a 9.15 am start in Ayrey’s Reserve Road Park to the north of the meeting spot to minimise disturbance of birds on the lake.
For those coming from Geelong on the Princes Highway, the turn off onto Ayrey’s Reserve Road is about twenty kilometres from Winchelsea. For those coming through Birregurra, the turn off is 2.5 kilometres, travelling west from Birregurra on the Birregurra Warncoort Road.
Bring: Morning tea, drinks, snacks, wet weather gear (check the forecast), solid footwear, hat, binoculars, sunscreen (as needed), camera and field guides.
Finish: Approx. 1 pm
